Is Aroma Therapy Beneficial for Plants

Welcome to Garden Warden

When I first knew about how aroma therapy could benefit my plants and garden, I was genuinely telling; I was skeptical. The thought of essential oils and their aromas affecting plants sounded like one of those internet trends designed to grab attention. But as I learned more, I perceived there might be something to it.

As I began using essential oils on my indoor plants and garden, the results surprised me. The aromas from these oils—some of which I will mention thereon—seemed to promote healing in my plants. Not only did they help repel pests and protect against predators, but they also strengthened the plants’ ability to withstand harsh weather and resist disease.

It excites me, so I dive deep into all the different ways we can use essential oils to protect various types of plants.

Aroma Therapy for Indoor Plants

Tea Tree Oil for Fungal Issue

Tea tree oil is popular for its antifungal benefits, making it a natural choice to help protect plants from fungi like powdery mildew. Some studies also confirm that the terpinen-4-ol active compound to combat fungal infection.

How to Apply: Mix 10-20 drops of tea tree oil in 8-10 ounces of water. Mist the leaves lightly, and spray it on the bottom of leaves, stems, and surrounding dirt, especially if you notice any white or powdery substance on them. Avoid spraying on hot days, as it can burn leaves.

Peppermint Oil for Pest Control

The menthol content in peppermint oil is very effective in repelling pests and insects, such as aphids, spider mites, and ants, which are common in indoor plants.

A study suggests that the menthol content in peppermint oil is effective at repelling insects by blocking their ability to sense food.

Looks like the study’s spot on—when I apply the solution to my plants, I momentarily lose my sense of smell, too! So, be sure to wear gloves and a mask while spraying.

How to Apply: Add 5-10 drops of oil in a cup of water and spray it on all over plants and the surrounding area of your pot. Change the solution every week.

Lavender Oil for a Growth Boost and Scent

Lavender Essential oil for plant growth

This one is my favorite because I love the pleasant fragrance of lavender. When you apply lavender solution to your plants, it improves the immune system of plants.

Some studies also reveal it has mild anti-fungal properties which saves the plants from root rot and fungal issues.

How to apply: Add 5 drops of lavender oil in a cup of water and spray it on plant soil to prevent fungal infection.

Personal advice – Make some small cotton balls add 2 to 3 drops of lavender oil to each, place them on the soil, and cover them with sand and soil. This will fill your room with a pleasant aroma.

Eucalyptus Oil for Mildew Prevention

The antimicrobial properties of eucalyptus oil make this a splendid choice to prevent mildew from growing on plants. Research shows that this oil can help reduce mold levels, making it suitable for humid indoor environments.

How to Apply: Dilute 6–8 drops of eucalyptus oil in a spray bottle with water and drizzle over the plants. Avoid spraying directly on flowers or delicate leaves, as it can cause harm
