Nowadays, hydroponic gardening has taken off in home gardens because of its adaptability and efficiency. The best part is that it allows precise control over lighting, nutrients, and moisture, often leading to faster growth and overcoming traditional gardening limitations.
There are various types of hydroponic systems available, but choosing the right one depends on the plant’s needs. For Forget-Me-Nots, which require constant moisture, the best options are the Deep Water Culture (DWC) and Wick system. Both are relatively easy to maintain and work well for plants with smaller root systems.
1. Deep Water Culture System
This system immerses the plant roots in oxygenated, nutrient-rich water, which creates an ideal environment for growth. This setup works especially well for forget-me-nots, as it provides a stable, consistent moisture level that these plants love.
Why DWC
- Forget-Me-Nots flourish in moist conditions, so constant exposure to water and nutrients is ideal for their growth. A hydroponic setup can meet these needs, providing the right balance to keep them healthy and blooming.
- A constant supply of oxygen from an air pump keeps the water oxygenated and promotes healthy root development.
Material
- Reservoir (a bucket or container for the water solution)
- Net pots (to hold the plants)
- Hydroponic medium (like rock wool or clay pebbles)
- Air pump and air stone (to oxygenate the water)
- Nutrient solution (balanced for hydroponics)
Install
- Mix hydroponic nutrient solution and water in your reservoir.
- Put the air stone and connect it to the air pump.
- Place the plants in net pots with a growing medium.
- Position the net pots to submerge the roots in the nutrient solution.
The right balance of fertilizer and water is essential for creating an ideal nutrient solution. Since forget-me-nots prefer mild nutrient levels, it’s best to start with lower concentrations to avoid over-fertilizing.
Here’s a general approach to mixing powdered fertilizer in a hydroponic DWC system:
- 600-800 ppm or an EC of 1.0-1.5 mS/cm is good for mild concentration.
- We recommend a mild concentration for young plants, then increase it to the full recommended dose as the plants mature.
- Buy a powdered fertilizer suitable for hydroponic use.
- Add 0.5 to 1 gram of fertilizer in a quart of water. Mix it well.
- Then add it to your DWC reservoir.
- Use a ppm or EC meter to measure the concentration after mixing. If the solution is too concentrated, add water to dilute it to between 600 and 800 ppm.
- Make sure pH remains between 6.0 and 6.5.
- Refresh the solution every 1-2 weeks, adjusting it based on the plant’s growth and overall health. Regular monitoring ensures that Forget-Me-Nots receive consistent and balanced nutrients for optimal development.
2. Wick System
This passive hydroponic method works well for plants needing moderate moisture, like forget-me-nots, and provides nutrient solutions to the plant roots without a pump, making it low maintenance.
Why Wick System?
- Allow moisture to reach the root consistently, ideal for forget-me-nots.
- No pumps needed easy to set up.
Material
- Reservoir with nutrient solution
- Wicks (cotton or nylon strips)
- Growing medium (coco coir or perlite)
- Containers or net pots
Install
- Pour the nutrient mixture into the reservoir and make sure it’s within the ideal pH range.
- Insert wicks through the base of the container, with one end submerged in the nutrient solution and the other end positioned near the plant’s roots. This will allow water and nutrients to travel to the roots as needed.
- Place the Forget-Me-Not plant in the container with a moisture-retentive medium like coco coir.
Maintenance: Check the reservoir’s nutrient solution level weekly and refill as needed. Refresh the nutrient solution every 1-2 weeks.
